SAARC Regional Expert Consultation on Policy Framing on Transboundary Fish Diseases and Their Control Measures in South Asia, Paro: Bhutan…

The SAARC Regional Expert Consultation meeting on “Policy Framing on Transboundary Fish Diseases and Their Control Measures in South Asia” was conducted at Metta Resort, Paro: Bhutan on 7-9 November 2018. The expert consultation meeting was jointly organized by the National Research & Development Centre for Aquaculture (NR&DCA), Gelephu-Sarpang, Bhutan and SAARC Agriculture Centre (SAC), Dhaka, Bangladesh with following objectives.

  1. To increase understanding of the current status of fish and crustacean diseases, quarantine, surveillance, monitoring, diagnosis, research and training in SAARC member countries.
  2. To prioritize areas of collaboration and partnerships for managing TAAPs/TAADs of regional importance involving international experts and agencies.
  3. To sensitize human resource development needs for capacity building in managing and research related to Transboundary aquatic diseases.

An inaugural function of the consultation meeting held on 7 November 2018 at Metta Resort and Dr. Karma Rinzin, Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO), Animal Health Division, Department of Livestock (DoL), representative of Ministry of Agriculture and Forests (MoAF) graced the occasion as Chief Guest.  Dr. Kesang Wangchuk, Chief of Research and Extension (RED), DoL and Mr. Singye Tshering, Program Director of National Research Centre for Riverine and Lake Fisheries (NRCR&LF), Haa were also present in the inaugural session as Guest. Mr. Pema Thinley, Livestock Production Officer, NR&DCA coordinated the program. Honorable Dasho Secretary, MoAF graced the closing ceremony held on 8 November, 2018 which was also attended by senior officials of DoL.

The researchers and professionals who are expert from SAARC member states-Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka participated in the consultation meeting. During the three days program, six member countries presented the country status report on the issue. Four invited papers were also presented on the second day of the program.  A part from the consultation meeting, the delegates got opportunity to visit NRCR&LF, Haa and Thimphu. After elaborate discussions, a good set of recommendations were made on different thematic areas for further intervention.
